The rapidly spreading monkeypox virus led the World Health Organization to declare a “public health emergency of international concern” this month.
“The outbreak has continued to grow, and there are now more than 16,000 cases reported from 75 countries and territories, and five deaths,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.
He added: “We have an outbreak that has spread… again Techniques From transitionof which we understand very little.
In recent years, the health agency has made such statements regarding the COVID-19, Ebola and Zika viruses.
How dangerous is monkeypox?
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says monkeypox is part of the same family of viruses as smallpox.
Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 among groups of monkeys used in the research. The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970. The virus spreads mainly through close contact with an infected person.
Until this year, the viral disease had rarely spread outside Africa. But reports of new cases in Europe and elsewhere have indicated the disease is spreading around the world.
The symptoms of monkeypox are similar to smallpox but are milder. Most patients only suffer Fever, achesand fatigue. Some may develop a hasty With wounds on their face and hands that can spread to other parts of the body. The illness usually lasts two to four weeks.
The virus can spread from person to person through direct contact with the contagious rash, sex with an infected person, or touching their clothing or bedding. A pregnant woman can also pass the virus to her fetus.
Unlike the SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic, monkeypox does not spread easily through the air.
Anyone can spread the virus, but the current outbreak outside Africa appears to be spreading mainly among men who have sex with men.
Why is it an emergency?
Health officials from several countries have urged the World Health Organization to declare monkeypox a public health emergency as the disease has spread rapidly in the past month.
From June to July, the World Health Organization reported that cases of monkeypox increased from 3,040 to more than 16,000. The number of infected countries also rose from 47 to 75.
Officials in particular expressed concern that the disease was spreading rapidly among people who had not traveled to Africa, where the disease is spreading. This means that it is permanently established in an area.
An emergency declaration usually brings more resources and measures to deal with an outbreak. It is also pushing countries to work together on testing and producing vaccines and treatments for this disease.
Currently, the World Health Organization has said the risk of monkeypox is “moderate” worldwide, except in Europe where it has listed the risk as “high”.
How to protect yourself
Health officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise people to avoid close skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that resembles monkeypox. They say:
- Do not touch, hug, kiss, or have sex with someone who has monkeypox.
- don’t share utensils to eat or drink
- Do not touch the bedding or clothing of an infected person.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use your own hands purgatory.
In Central and West Africa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people should avoid contact with animals that can spread monkeypox virus, such as monkeys and ferrets. They should also avoid sick or dead animals.
At this time, health officials are still learning whether children and people with existing health problems are more likely to get sick.
treatment or treatment
If you have monkeypox, health officials say you should stay isolated.
There is no cure for monkeypox. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that monkeypox and smallpox viruses are genetically similar, which means that antiviral drugs and vaccines developed to protect against smallpox can be used to prevent and treat monkeypox virus infection.
Health officials in the United States and Europe say that antiviral drugs, such as tecovirimat, may be given to people who are at higher risk of serious illness. This group includes patients with weakened immune systems.
Health officials in Europe and the United States also recently announced that they will be sending monkeypox vaccines to affected communities. The shot shot vaccine is manufactured at the Bavarian Nordic plant in Denmark.
