“I don’t see Ashwin playing in the 2022 T20 World Cup”

Former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel does not see Ravichandran Ashwin in the scheme of things for the 2022 T20 World Cup. The non-rotating player was called into the T20I squad after an eight-month absence, and it was his last appearance in a series at home against New Zealand.

India continued with Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja in the majority of their T20I series this year. With Chahal rested and Yadav recovering from the injury, the selection committee was tight in Ashwin for the five-match series against the West Indies.

Referring to Bishnoi making a stronger case than Ashwin for a place in Play XI, Parthiv Patel said on Cricbuzz, referring to Bishnoi making a stronger case than Ashwin for a place in Play XI:

“You can play two wrist spinners, why not? India followed this theory with Kuldeep and Chahal in the past. Also, Bishnoi is a different type of spinner than Chahal, he throws more googlies, he’s like a non spinner.”

The former wicket keeper added:

“If you ask me, I will play Ashwin instead of Ashwin, I don’t see Ashwin playing in the T20 World Cup.”

Ashwin has been a consistent performer on the limited opportunities he’s had since the 2021 T20 World Cup. The Tamil Nadu-born spinner has captured 11 wickets in six T20I matches, but will battle an uphill battle to cement his place in the T20 World Cup squad.

“Ashwin doesn’t give you the option to attack” – Parthiv Patel

Ashwin scored 2/22 in India’s overall 68-round win over the West Indies led by Nicholas Buran in his first T20I. However, with the World Cup taking place in Australia and the high probability of Chahal playing in the XI, the player’s future involvement is unclear.

Noting that leg braces provide an option to attack, especially in the middle, said Parthiv Patel, noting that the leg braces:

“I want variety in the form of Kuldeep and Bishnoi as well with Chahal as the first choice. The wrist deer gives you that offensive option in between. Ashwin doesn’t give you that offensive option for me.”

The conditions for spinning at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, India gave the luxury of participating in three spinners. With the chain now headed to St. Kitts, The Men in Blue may have to go with a third tailor, leading to a slight selection headache.
