Giants Training Camp Day 5: Live updates from the first lined practice

The New York Giants take the field Monday at 10 a.m. for their fifth practice at 2022 training camp, the first to be on the draw podiums. Big Blue View is close at hand and will give you all the coverage we can do on our website, via the BigBlueView account on Twitter, on our podcast channels and on YouTube.

Monday is the first day the Giants, according to their collective bargaining agreement, are allowed to practice on full platforms. Head coach Brian Dabol was looking forward to it.

“That’s really when training — I mean that’s great. There’s a lot of good teaching here. It’s really, like I said in the spring, it’s a learning camp. It’s competitive because there are fans and the nature of bootcamp,” Daboll said. They need to do it physically and they are able to do it, and to practice that a little bit more, I think we’ve all been waiting for that.”

Training, of course, will not be comprehensive with direct intervention. There will be physical play on the line, and enough kicks in the open field to make things interesting.

“We’re going to keep them off the ground and get out of the middle,” Daboll said. “But you can actually see the basics you’re teaching. They’re doing a really good job now of trying to get it done, but when you have the pads, especially in the trenches, you’ll feel really good about some of these guys, their strength, their stabilization ability, their ability to get through the rush. It’s hard to tell that (Defensive Line) Dexter (Lawrence) isn’t rushing a bull now without platforms. So, when we get to those platforms, we’ll be able to see their full arsenal.”

Daboll said the action packed is when player evaluation really begins.

“Come on Monday, you’ll really start to assess. We’re not going to sit down as workers – we did at the end of spring. That’s like an extension of spring for the scouts and the coaching staff. After a few days of pads and we start,” Daboll said. He was so successful he used (to say), ‘Let’s not be instant residents.’ Three days of training, we’re going to give these guys some time here.”

Use the Twitter stream below to keep up with all of the day’s events. The day will begin with Daboll’s meeting with the media at 9:30.

Here are some of what happened so far:

  • Ed did a one-on-one interview with Smug Edge sophomore Elerson Smith, who was a good start to boot camp. On Friday’s “Valentine’s Views” podcast, you can hear some of what Smith had to say.
