Detroit Lions Bubble Training Camp Clock: Players go up and down when attacking

While it’s easy to be drawn into playing the expected Detroit Lions starters in training camp, practices may be more important to players at the bottom of the depth chart. A streak of good practice can be the difference between continuing the NFL dream and finding a new field of action.

That’s why across all training camps, we’ll keep track of the players on the Lions roster and give our opinion on whether or not they make the initial 53-player squad roster. This allows us to keep dropping a list of 53 running people and give you updates on which players are going in the right and wrong directions by comparing results to previous weeks.

It’s only been a week into camp and the pads haven’t appeared yet, so most of the changes so far have been minor. However, here’s how we think the menu bubble has changed on attack so far.

quarterback

  • David Plouffe – 7 “for” votes (unchanged)
  • Tim Boyle – 5 “IN” votes (<2 votes)

Another pair of Detroitz pride succumbed to the idea of keeping only two quarterbacks on the roster after another frustrating week of both backups at training camp. With both quarterbacks splitting the second-team representatives into camp, it’s hard to tell who exactly is up front, but the staff prefers a little more experienced Blough.

running back

  • Craig Reynolds – 9 (over 4)
  • Godwin Igwebuike – 6 (unchanged)
  • Germar Jefferson – 1 (bottom 4)

The most drastic changes in Bubble Watch Week 2 came into a reversal, with Craig Reynolds moving to the “IN” consensus of our staff. Reynolds is still third in offensive repetition, which makes sense given how strong he showed his greatest potential in 2021.

Germar Jefferson saw a decline in his voices, likely due to his continued acting among the newest members of the group. Jefferson sees a lot of different roles on the specials – where he may have to win a place – but he has yet to shine in those drills, even if he looks more comfortable there this year.

tight end

  • New in Bubble Clock: James Mitchell – 9 votes
  • Brock Wright – 9 (unchanged)
  • Garrett Griffin – 1 (unchanged)
  • Shane Zylstra – 0 (unchanged)

Mitchell fell into the bubble, as Black brought him in very slowly after the ACL recovered. However, everyone on the cast has a unanimous “IN” even though it ranks pretty low on the depth chart at the moment. That’s not all that is unfamiliar for beginners, so we don’t sweat.

However, Funchess missed the last two exercises with a mild thigh injury. It doesn’t look like he’s going to be out for long, but it’s never a good idea to waste time when you’re in a heated fight.

wide future

  • Quintess Cephus – 8 (unchanged)
  • Trinity Benson – 6 (bottom 3)
  • Tom Kennedy – 0 (unchanged)

I’m not quite sure why Trinity Benson fell this week. Can Pick up a highlight reel on Quintez Cephus He had some thinking that he would get the advantage in the match. However, since Cephus didn’t get any more votes, our staff might think Jameson Williams could be back soon, or they would like the Lions to have a spot on a roster somewhere other than WR6.

offensive tackle

  • Dan Skipper – 2 (unchanged)
  • Opena Ease – 0 (unchanged)

Outside the bubble clock: Matt Nelson (inside)

No change here, other than Nelson is now assumed. Dan Skipper missed most of the first week on the list of non-football-related illnesses and Obinna Eazy looked like a rude newbie.

goalkeeper / center

  • Logan Stenberg – 5 (over 1)
  • Tommy Kramer – 4 (unchanged)
  • Kevin Jarvis – 1 (unchanged)

Outside the bubble clock: Evan Brown (inside)

Although Kevin Jarvis did get some periodic work with the first-team offensive (when Jonah Jackson relieved Frank Ragno of some reps in the center), there was very little change in the guards’ offensive vote. Stenberg got an extra vote, but expect the offensive line positions to see more change when the pads come out and we get some one-on-one drills.
