Davis Love III, a 1997 PGA Championship winner with 21 PGA Tour victories, suggested that one way to tackle the LIV Golf problem was to start the boycott.

Love told Sports Illustrated Friday that he was troubled by the way LIV Golf was able to take over PGA Tour players and thus throw things like the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup into disarray. He said he could expect a strike among PGA Tour players if LIV Golf competitors were allowed to play in a major.

Well, that’s the biggest lever, and it’s not the nicest one, said the World Golf Hall of Fame. But if a group of veterans and a group of current top players join 150 players on the tour, and we say, ‘Guess what? We don’t play,” that solves it, right? If the LIV guys play in the US Open, we don’t play. If they sue in court, and they win, well, we don’t play. You know, there’s not going to be a US Open. It’s like Baseball hit.”

LIV Golf players were allowed to compete in the PGA Championship, the US Open, and the Open Championship despite being suspended indefinitely from the PGA Tour. Golfers who have resigned from the PGA Tour will not be allowed to play in PGA Tour events as non-members through Exempt Sponsor or any other eligibility category either.

The suspensions called into question the eligibility of LIV golfers for the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup because they would need the qualification points earned at PGA Tour events. Henrik Stenson went so far as to resign from the Ryder Cup team captain to join LIV Golf.

Mark Hubbard says he can’t believe in a single hole: ‘stabbed’

Love said he tried to get golfers to jump ship and asked if they were okay with never playing the President’s Cup or the Ryder Cup again.

“Some of them got it,” he told Sports Illustrated. “Some of them think they’re going to court or something and they’re going to win, and they’ll be back.” “What they don’t seem to understand is that players make the rules. So we can strengthen the rules instead of softening them, right?”
