Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United – Football Match Report – 30 July 2022

Eric ten Hag suffered his first defeat as manager of Manchester United as Atletico Madrid secured a 1-0 victory in a pre-season friendly match in Oslo.

Joao Felix scored the only goal of the match three minutes before the end of the match after a contentious confrontation that led to Fred being sent off in stoppage time.

The opportunity was presented by Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire for United, who suffered their first setback of the summer after three wins and a draw on their tour of Thailand and Australia.

Ten Hag gave a hint about his starting line-up for next week’s Premier League opener against Brighton by picking a strong squad against Atletico that included Maguire, Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial.

Jadon Sancho was also going to start after taking a trip to Oslo but missed it after falling ill overnight.

New signings Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen have signed for the first time after completing their move to Old Trafford.

Eriksen was impressed after he came on as a second-half substitute but the Danish midfielder found no way to break down a stubborn Atletico defense that held on despite heavy pressure from Ten Hag.

Both Rashford and Maguire had good chances to score, but it was Joao Felix who got his chance of late when he shot low past De Gea.

Fred, booked in the first half, was sent off for a second yellow card after a confrontation with Alvaro Morata.

Ten Hag has another chance to dominate his pre-season players with a friendly match against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday.

It is set to give the squad’s players a chance to boost their fitness against the Spanish team while Cristiano Ronaldo has also indicated that he will play some role.

Ronaldo returned to Carrington last week after missing the tour to deal with a family issue.

The 37-year-old is keen to leave the club this summer although United have so far been firm in their position that they are not available to move.

The Portuguese striker has a year on his contract, plus the option of another season, and has been linked with moves to Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
