The Pittsburgh Steelers are back at St. Vincent College for the first time since 2019, and fans have descended on La Trobe, Pennsylvania hoping to catch a glimpse of the 2022 squad.
What happened during the last training camp exercises? This is where this article comes in. Check out all that was said, plus photos and videos from the daily workouts.
here we are…
The Pittsburgh Steelers have plenty of question tags across the menu, and the coaching staff will take every practice and preseason game to find a way to get answers to these questions. There have been a lot of storylines coming out of Wednesday’s practice, and we highlight some of them below:
Battle of Olin
Most assume that the offensive line will have very few fights, but one that might be one to watch is in the left guard. Kendrick Green has become a resilient player both in goalkeeper and center, and is now pressing Kevin Dotson to appear in a big way in his third year. At least on day one, the two 50-50-year-olds were figurative and literal.
As you can see, in # steel OL drills, there are 6 men in the front group, with Kevin Dotson and Kendrick Green side by side. They both said they were 50-50 in the left guard’s place in the small camp. They seem to go hand in hand a bit to start camp. pic.twitter.com/LTzy6J9YNC

First team attack
It’s day one, but of course people want to know who was taking shots for the first team during training.
Steelers first attack live:
Mitch Trubesky, Nagy Harris
George Pickens, Chase Claypool (slot), Deontay Johnson
Dan Moore, Kevin Dotson, Mason Cole, James Daniels, Chox Okorafor– Brian Batko 27 July 2022
1 defense team
Just like the offense, here’s who was starting on the defensive side of football.
Steelers First Team D:
Cam Heyward, Chris Wormley
TJ Watt, Devin Bush, Miles Jack, Alex Highsmith
Ahkello Witherspoon, Damontae Kazee, Terrell Edmunds, Cam Sutton (slot), Levi Wallace– Brian Batko 27 July 2022
Minka is still working
It was announced on Tuesday how Minkah Fitzpatrick will start camp on the NFI (Non-Football Injury) list with a wrist injury. This does not mean that Fitzpatrick is sitting in the dorms in St. Vincent and snacking. Here he works on his grips with one hand.
Minka Fitzpatrick was engaged in catching singles with only his left hand. Tomlin did not reveal which side Fitzpatrick was injured by falling off his bike. pic.twitter.com/0H99j0GeVf

Pickens shows out
George Pickens isn’t the most outfield player on the team, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t make a big showing at his rookie training camp. During the first workout, it was Pickens who paid a lot of attention to his body control and great playing ability.
Just take a look at what the reporters had to say about the Steelers’ second-round draft…
They are currently conducting contested fishing drills on the sidelines here. George Pickens jumped in the air and did a really nice spin along the sidelines.
His control over his body is fantastic. You can see her live better.

George Pickens almost came down with a crooked catch that infuriated the public. He caught the ball but lost it when it hit the ground.

This time, George Pickens’ catch escaped the ground with a deep throw from Mitch Trubisky. Tweet embed It is estimated to be a 40-45 yard throw on the sidelines.

Pickens had a nice grip on a skinny prism. I didn’t see many meager posts last season.

It’s only a day away, but it’s okay to get excited about Pickens and how he can influence the offense, even if he’s a novice.
Diontae Hold In?
Deontay Johnson was in the camp, although he wanted a new contract, but he did not participate in the team’s training. Is that another hold, like last year’s TJ Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick during the OTAs and this junior camp out of season? Mike Tomlin admitted the situation after the rehearsal, but it will be something to watch as camp progresses.
Diontae Johnson takes a page out of the playbook at TJ Watt training camp. Reminder: Johnson said earlier today that he would be fully engaged if it was up to him, but Mike Tomlin may decide otherwise. pic.twitter.com/4r1nhsATU4

Sign of things to come for Mitch?
When the Steelers drafted Pete producer Kenny Pickett in the first round, Mitch Trubesky had to know he had an uphill battle ahead. No, not in his ability to play in 2022, but especially from the fan base if he’s struggling. Well, he didn’t get off to the best start, and you can already start hearing fans call out Beckett.
As ESPN’s Brooke Pryor said, “And so it begins…”
Mitch Trubisky takes the first reps of the first team and has an incompleteness. One fan shouts, “Get Beckett there!”
and so it begins.

QB Update
Speaking of quarterbacks, here’s a breakdown of what they did during the third games, and the fact that Chris Oldcon was more of a spectator during team practice than he was the NFL quarterback.
First set of third bottom plays: Trubisky Gold 1/4, Rudolph 4/4, Beckett 2/4.
But we wouldn’t read into every boot camp, would we?

CA3
While George Pickens grabbed everyone’s attention a lot during camp, so did Calvin Austin III. It was Austin who took a wide receiver screen passing 61 yards to land. Yes, it is fast.
A quick on-screen play by Calvin Austin and he takes her home. 61 yards TD for Austin. Dude got it, took off, and was gone.
