The new Cervélo S5 bike is simpler, faster and easier to live with

Cervélo has released the latest update to the S5, the Canadian brand’s flagship aero bike.

While the new Cervélo S5 looks very different from the outgoing model, Cervélo says there have been some significant changes, all of which make the 2022 model “simpler, faster and easier to live with than before.”

In addition to updating the tube profiles to take advantage of the latest changes to UCI’s technical regulations, Cervélo says he has worked hard to simplify the front end, to make maintenance and modification easier on the bike.

Tire clearance has also been significantly raised, with room for the new S5 tires up to 34mm (measured width).

Cervélo is also launching a new aerodynamic wheel set, the Reserve 52/63 along with the new S5, with some significant aero claims.

The new Cervélo S5 was a huge success at the 2022 Tour de France.

Although it hasn’t been officially launched yet, the new S5 has made an impressive debut at the Tour de France with the dominant Jumbo-Visma team. Overall winner Jonas Weinggaard and green jersey winner Wout van Aert both rode the new bike on occasion during the race.

Cervélo claims that the outgoing S5 was “already the fastest road bike on the market” (a claim also made by Cannondale regarding SystemSix).

Although the changes seem rather low at a glance, the new S5 is said to offer a 65g reduction in aerodynamic drag versus the outgoing model.

According to Flo Cycling, this equates to about 8.45 watts at 48 kph/30 mph.

2023 Cervélo S5 outwardly is very similar to the previous model, but there were a number of changes.

It appears that much of that improvement can be attributed to the new 52/63 spare wheel set (more on this later), which is said to “save just over 5 watts” compared to the outgoing 50/65 Reserve wheel set.

The rest can be attributed to the frame’s updated tube profiles, Cervelo says, including a “deeper head tube and lower bracket area, and more aggressive shaping on the trailing edges of the tubes.”

The fork has also been updated with a “new aerodynamic nose”, which juts forward from the head tube like the bow of a small ship.

The front end of the 2023 Cervélo S5 is said to be simpler and more aerodynamic than before.

As mentioned earlier, these changes take advantage of recent updates to the UCI’s technical regulations allowing for slightly deeper and more dynamic tube shapes.

The front derailleur mount is now also removable, giving riders the option to operate a streamlined, more dynamic 1x drivetrain setup.

The 2023 Cervélo S5 had a big bump in tire clearance, up to 34mm.

Frame and fork clearance has also been increased to accommodate tires up to 34mm in width (measured width), and all construction comes with 28-622 (700×28C) Vittoria Corsa TLR G2.0 tires as standard.

As we saw on the fifth stage of the 2022 Tour de France – which featured 18 kilometers of brutal gravel road borrowed from Paris-Roubaix – the new S5 could easily accommodate the dense tires for a fast off-road ride.

Simplified cockpit

Cervélo made it easy to tune the front end of the new S5.

While the S5’s cockpit from the outside looks practically identical to that of the previous model, Cervélo says it’s made some major changes to streamline and brighten the front end.

Since there is no traditional steerer tube, the fork is held in place with a tension rod and a large screw via the top headset bearing.

This means that the stack height can be adjusted up and down by 30mm using spacers, without having to scale anything down to size.

Cervélo admits that the old S5 was somewhat difficult to work with, which makes trying a different riding mode less than ideal.
servillo

Cervélo has also ditched the bolt sizes for the stack, which means it’s also easier to swap out a stem for a different-sized model than before (although it looks like you’ll still have to deal with the stem’s internal cable routing).

Despite appearances, the cables on the handlebars are routed externally, through a small duct on the underside of the bar, which is then concealed by the handlebar tape.

In total, these changes are claimed to save 53 grams of weight.

Cervélo also says the handlebars are now connected in a simpler way than before and allow up to 5 degrees of rotation, with no separate steps, to help with “proper contact”.

2023 The Cervélo S5 will be shipped with a 15mm seatpost as standard.
servillo

The new S5 will ship with a 15mm seatpost, rather than the 25mm offset version specified on the previous model.

The seatposts will be compatible with each other (which means you can use an older 25mm adjustment shaft if you’d like), but Cervelo says “cyclists at every level are staying away from the longer offset seats.”

Reserve 52/63 wheels

The new Reserve 52/63 wheel set is said to be the key to the new S5’s improved aerodynamic credentials.

As we’ve seen with wheels like the Roval Rapide CLX II and in the ENVE SES range, the Reserve 52/63 combines two different rim profiles optimized specifically for their location on the bike.

Up front, there is a wider, shallower rim to improve stability in windy conditions, while at the rear there is a slightly deeper and narrower rim to improve aerodynamic performance.

The new 52/63 wheel set from Reserve is said to be a big gain in the air for the new Cervélo S5.
Spare

Like Hunt’s 60 Limitless Aero Disc wheel set, the Reserve 52/63 wheel set is also drastically wide, with a 35mm/52mm wide front rim and a 34mm wide/63mm deep rear rim.

The inner rim width is ultra-wide at 25mm and 24mm front and rear.

The claimed weight of the wheel set varies depending on the hub selection, but the lightest spec possible with DT Swiss 180 hubs is claimed to weigh 1,514 grams.

Reserve 52/63 wheels alone are priced at $1799.00, but the wheel kit is offered on every new S5 with Zipp ZR1 ST or ZR1 SS hubs.

Cervelo S5 Prices, Specs and Availability

The new Cervélo S5 is available in four designs or as a set of wheels.

Unlike the previous model, the new Cervélo S5 is only compatible with electronic groupsets, but there are no build options for the cheapest electronic groups available, the SRAM Rival eTap AXS and Shimano 105 Di2 R7150.

As expected, Cervélo adheres to the BBright pressure-friendly lower mount standard.

Prices start at £5,499 for a frameset, which includes frame, fork, handlebar, stem and seat base.

All complete builds include the new Reserve 52/63 wheel set. It’s priced from £9,199 for the S5 Ultegra Di2, which has Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8170 groupset, and goes up to £12,999 for the S5 Red eTap AXS, which has the SRAM Red eTap AXS groupset.

International pricing and claimed weights for the tire set and all versions have yet to be confirmed, and we’ll update this article when we receive that information.

We have the S5 Force eTap AXS to test (look for a review soon), and it weighs 8.29kg without the size 56 pedals.
