Mets’ Jacob deGrom kicks off to make final rehab possible on Wednesday

The Mets’ dream rotation has yet to be revealed, but Wednesday is expected to feature a high-octane tone that could make or break this season.

Jacob Degrom will make what could be his last rehab that afternoon in a home game for Triple-A Syracuse, while that night Max Scherzer will likely be for the Mets at Citi Field against the Yankees.

DeGrom will bid for a six-day rest against the Omaha Storm Chasers, a member of the Royals, after throwing 60 pitches in a simulation game in Port St. Lucie on Thursday.

The team said that ace’s sim was two days late because there was a soreness around his shoulder. He came through out OK and threw a pulp session at Citifield on Sunday.

The 34-year-old, who hasn’t played this season after coming out in spring training with a pressure reaction in his right scapula, has made three minor league games in which he’s beaten (15 strokes in 8²/innings) but hasn’t gone beyond The five-game threshold that Buck Showalter said was the target before Degroom debuted in 2022.

Showalter was asked on Sunday if DeGrom’s next rehab start would be his last.

“I know what the plan is, but if something happens to make us deviate from that plan, we will, which we have a few times, hardly, [by] A day or two,” said the director. “For now, I know what the plan is and I’d rather not bring it up completely until we get to this step.”

If the right-hander is deemed ready after Wednesday, he can start his season in Washington on Monday or Tuesday.

The Mets have never seen Degroom and Scherzer together, but on Wednesday they should see one after the other.

The Mets led by seven games in the eighth inning on Sunday and still had to call in Edwin Diaz to save.

As the August 2 trading deadline approaches, the Mets rule makes clear that at least one addition is necessary for a team with World Championship hopes.

In the 8-5 win over Padres at Citi Field, Drew Smith allowed a ninth in his past 9/rounds, David Peterson, who was so good that he let the starters out of the game, Julie Rodriguez faced four hitters and retired none before Diaz put out a fire The ninth inning.

Rodriguez’s ERA has a size of 5.93, their only real dwelling after Chasen Shreve has been set for assignment and could be overseas soon, with the Mets in the market for a southpaw.

Perhaps the Mets can reunite with Aaron Loeb, now with the Angels. Other leftists who might interest the Mets include Detroit’s Gregory Soto and Andrew Chavin, Arizona’s Joe Manteble, Texas’ Matt Moore, Oakland’s Sam Mull and Miami’s Tanner Scott.

The Mets can also import a right arm, although they will have to include the internal extras they expect to activate. Trevor May has started his rehab stint at Double-A Binghamton and could be back in early August. Tylor Megill (strained right shoulder) will be out until at least mid-August, and the Mets will likely ask him for help from the bulls rather than a spin.

However, the Mets’ right arms were shaky behind Diaz and Adam Ottavino, and the Mets could try to replace Colin Holdman, who has been replaced by Daniel Vogelbach.

The market is vast, but the Cubs’ David Robertson, the Rockies’ Daniel Bard and Tiger’s Michael Vollmer are the odds of contracts expiring.

Jeff McNeill is 2 for 28 in his past eight games, dropping his average from .317 to .293.

“It was very difficult to maintain the level he was hitting and playing at,” Showalter said this weekend. “He runs better, feels better in his legs, and it’s good to see. … I wouldn’t doubt him at all. He has a proven track record of offensive contributions, and I think he will find that again.”

With a 2v4 night in victory over the Padres on Sunday, Starling Marte scored his 30th multi-hit match of the season, which was the seventh most NL game.

Starling walked in and hit a sharp ball straight from the chute [in the sixth],” Showalter said of the first hit in a five-round run. “It almost feels like at that point, our players said ‘Well, there’s a game to be won here.’”
