7 Long Island Hospitals Receive National Honors for Specialized Care

Seven Long Island hospitals have been awarded National Honors for Specialty Care and six are among the top 10 hospitals in New York State, US News & World Report announced Tuesday.

The media company named NYU Langone Health Hospitals, which includes NYU Langone Hospital – Long Island in Mineola, 3rd in the nation and 1st in the state.

Among the individually ranked hospitals, the highest facility on Long Island was Northwell Health University Hospital North Shore in Manhasset, ranked fifth in the state. The New Hyde Park-based health system had three other hospitals that were ranked among the best in New York: Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park (No. 7) Huntington Hospital (No. 10) and South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore (No. 15) ). Additionally, US News last month ranked the system’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park as number two in the state.

Other Long Island hospitals that ranked among the best facilities in New York State were St. Francis Hospital and the Heart Center of Catholic Health in Rosslyn (No. 6), Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip (No. 26), Stony Brook University Hospital (No. 9) and Mount Sinai south of Nassau in Oceanside (#28).

“We have some great places on Long Island to get healthcare,” Northwell President and CEO Michael Dowling said in an interview. But he said, “You should never be completely satisfied, you always have to level up and get better.”

This is the second year that Manhattan-based NYU Langone Health has presented joint data on hospitals in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Nassau in its US News Report. In 2020, the facility then known as New York University’s Winthrop Hospital ranked fifth in the New York metropolitan area.

Reporting data together for all of the system’s hospitals helps ensure that “care is the same no matter where our patients in the NYU Langone system go to get care,” said Dr. Joseph Greco, senior vice president and chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone. Long Island Hospital.

In the report released Tuesday, US News ranked hospitals in 15 specialties.

NYU Langone Hospitals ranked first nationwide in neurology and neurosurgery and third in geriatrics. They also have National Honors in 12 other specialties: Cancer (No. 19), Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (No. 5), Diabetes and Endocrinology (No. 3), ENT (No. 26), Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery (No. No. 5), Obstetrics and Gynecology (No. 11), Orthopedics (No. 4), Psychiatry (No. 10), Pulmonology and Pulmonology (No. 4), Rehabilitation (No. 7), Rheumatology (No. 7) and Urology (No. 10).

North Shore is nationally ranked in 11 specialties: Cancer (No. 41), Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (No. 16), Diabetes and Endocrinology (No. 38), ENT (No. 41), Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery (No. No. 30), Geriatrics (No. 24), Neurology and Neurosurgery (No. 45), Obstetrics and Gynecology (No. 42), Orthopedics (No. 30), Pulmonology and Pulmonology (No. 14) and Urology (No. 25).

Among Northwell’s other hospitals, Long Island Jewish is ranked #7 in the nation for obstetrics and gynecology, and has also been honored for otolaryngology (#46), geriatrics (#40), neurology and neurosurgery (#17), pulmonology and Pulmonary surgery (No. 41) and Urology (No. 20). Huntington Hospital is ranked 45th in the United States for pulmonology and lung surgery, and Glenn Cove Hospital is ranked 47th best hospital in the United States for rehabilitation.

St. Francis, part of the Catholic Health Center in Rockville, has national honors in cardiology and cardiac surgery (No. 29), gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery (No. 27), geriatrics (No. 36), and neurology and neurosurgery (No. No. 30) and Orthopedics (No. 38). Dr. Jason Gulpin, executive vice president and medical director at Catholic Health, said the health system is adding St. Francis centers dedicated to diagnosing and treating chest pain at its other hospitals. “We felt it was so important that we take this cardiology expertise and share it and disseminate it through the organization,” Gulpin said.

Stony Brook is ranked #41 in the country for urology and #50 for diabetes and endocrinology.

This is the 33rd edition of US News’ Best Hospitals list. The media company analyzes data on survival rates, staffing of nurses, patient evaluations, and surveys of doctors, among other factors.

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was named the best hospital in the country, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles came in second on the list.

No single hospital on Long Island has made the list of the top 20 nationally. In Manhattan, New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell ranked seventh overall in the country, and Mount Sinai Hospital was named #16.
