  • Virat Kohli’s childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, has backed a superstar playing for India at the 2023 World Cup.
  • This star was not named in India’s squad for the 2021 World Cup.
  • Team India recently defeated the West Indies in their first international match of the three-match series.
Led by veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan, India face the West Indies in the three-game One Day International (ODI) series. Overlooked by the 2021 T20 World Cup selectors, Dhawan will continue to lead Team India in a three-game ODI series against men from the Caribbean. Dhawan was appointed captain of the Indian national team in the absence of captain Rohit Sharma, former captain Virat Kohli and champion Jaspreet Pomrah.

India topped the lead in the series opener, with veteran Dhawan scoring the highest score for the visitors at the Queen’s Park Oval. Dhawan led 97 of 99 Ball India to 308-7 in the Over-50 Contest. Riding on Dhawan’s superstar batting technique, India defeated the West Indies in their first ODI to lead 1-0 over the hosts. Under Dhawan’s leadership, India will be hoping to secure the three-match streak by extending their winning streak over the West Indies in Sunday’s second ODI.

Speaking before the series was decided, Rajkumar Sharma, Virat Kohli’s childhood coach, supported Dhawan to appear in India’s squad for next year’s ODI World Cup. During a discussion on India News, Sharma admitted that Dhawan fits perfectly with Rohit’s offensive policy in white ball cricket. One of the best openers in ODI cricket, veteran Dhawan collected 6,422 rounds out of 153 ODIs for India. With an average of 45.55, Dhawan blasted 17 centuries and 36 half centuries for the Asian giants.
