This huge change in the Facebook app will leave seniors confused

The traditional idea about Facebook these days is that the users for whom the Facebook app is still an essential part of their existence are, to use a scientific nomenclature for this particular demographic, “old people”. Younger netizens—and, in fact, plenty of Facebook users—flocked to apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, where demise is a larger part of the overall experience.

Rather than doubling the number of older Facebook users who still log into the app each day, though, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday, July 21, announced a new offer to attract younger users. In other words, to make the overall Facebook app experience, a completely overhauled product similar to TikTok. One that also adds new feeds that users can switch through. And that, if we’re being honest, is likely to confuse seniors still on the app.

“One of the most requested features on Facebook is making sure people don’t miss friends’ posts,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post. “So today we are launching a Feeds tab where you can see posts from your friends, groups, pages and more separately in chronological order.

“The app will remain open to display a personalized feed on the Home tab, where our discovery engine will recommend content we think you will be most interested in. But the Feeds tab will give you a way to further customize and control your experience.”

This new Facebook app fix will also prioritize video loops in the main feed. And it would provide a way for Facebook to do something similar to TikTok which Instagram is already doing right now. Have you noticed how, after scrolling on your Instagram feed for a while, you will eventually see posts from accounts you don’t follow? That is, posts that Instagram thinks you might like. That’s the whole premise about TikTok’s For You page, of course. And Facebook wants to add a little of that magic to its own app.

The competition with TikTok intensifies

By the way, this is a tried and true page from Zuckerberg’s playbook. If you can’t beat them, try buying them. If not, just copy it directly.

Moreover, here is one of the biggest indicators that TikTok is a potential existential threat to Facebook, which is perhaps the largest targeted ad machine in history. TikTok has not only found a way to addictive to the coveted young users that Facebook wants to regain control over. Advertising revenue in the US is also expected to increase this year by 184%. Up to $5.96 billion, to be more specific.

No wonder Facebook sees TikTok as the newest and perhaps the most dangerous threat to its core business. Especially with TikTok, the currently most visited site in the world, having reached a state, no pun intended, that Facebook once enjoyed:

Blake Chandlee, a former Facebook user who now serves as the head of global business solutions at TikTok, recently made another important distinction between the two products. Namely, TikTok is more of an entertainment platform than a social network.

“Facebook is a social platform,” Chandley said during an interview CNBC. “They built all their algorithms based on the social graph. This is their core competency. Our country is not. We are an entertainment platform. The difference is huge. It is a huge difference.”
