The Best Arthritis Drink, Says a Dietitian – Eat This Not so

If you have arthritis, you are one of about 58.5 million people in the United States who (or 1 in 4 adults) struggle with this disease. It’s a leading cause of disability at work, with more than half of adults in the United States (57.3%) having arthritis of working age between 18 and 64 years old.

The good news is that there are ways to reduce its symptoms, which include pain, tenderness, stiffness, and swelling in or around the joints. Examples include taking supplements, watching what you eat, and drinking certain beverages. “My favorite drink for reducing symptoms related to arthritis is green berry juice,” Upton says.

Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder, and Upton says adding anti-inflammatory foods to your diet may help calm this inflammation that causes arthritis symptoms. “this is [smoothie] It is an antioxidant-rich, nutrient-rich beverage that contains bioactive compounds that help reduce inflammation, “which is what causes pain and joint stiffness when you have arthritis.”

How blueberries can target arthritis symptoms.

Studies show that cranberries may play a key role in reducing inflammation and targeting arthritis symptoms due to the fruit’s high concentration of anti-inflammatory flavonoid polyphenols, especially anthocyanins.

Anthocyanins are a specific type of antioxidant found in cranberry skin that has been shown to have a high antioxidant capacity, a measure of the number of cell-damaging free radicals a plant compound can eliminate, as discussed in Functional Foods Magazine study.

Another bioactive polyphenol, known as malvidin-3-glucoside, found in wild blueberries, has also been linked to significantly reduced expression of proinflammatory genes.

There is also evidence to support a direct link between consuming antioxidant-rich blueberries and relieving arthritis symptoms. One study set out to examine the effect of eating freeze-dried blueberries daily on participants with knee osteoarthritis — a type of arthritis that occurs when elastic tissue at the ends of bones wears down. Participants who took 40 grams of freeze-dried cranberry powder every day for four months showed less pain, stiffness, and difficulty performing daily activities compared to the control group. Researchers believe these findings are a sign that blueberry supplementation may therefore improve quality of life in individuals with osteoporosis.

How leafy greens, such as spinach, can fight arthritis symptoms.

When it comes to choosing greens for this smoothie, Upton prefers baby spinach.

Like blueberries, spinach may also relieve symptoms of arthritis.

When researchers asked 217 people to determine whether the 20 foods included in the questionnaire improved or increased symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spinach was one of the foods most frequently reported to improve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms (the other being Blueberry). Soft drinks and sweets were more associated with worsening rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. This was a self-reported study, so more research needs to be done to establish a link between spinach and improvement in rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

One way that spinach may help relieve arthritis symptoms is similar to that of blueberries by reducing inflammation. Spinach contains high levels of an antioxidant known as kaempferol, which has been shown to reduce the effects of inflammatory compounds associated with rheumatoid arthritis. However, more research is needed to confirm this effect in humans.

Besides its ability to fight arthritis, spinach is good for your heart. According to several studies, spinach has been linked to lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. These green leaves are also beneficial for weight loss. It is low in calories, low in carbohydrates, and contains tons of nutrients. That’s not all.   • 1 cup frozen cranberries
  • 1/4 cup plain, non-fat Greek yogurt
