Patrick Mahomes unconcerned about other QB contracts: ‘I knew I’d stay for life’

Patrick Mahomes still has the highest contract — by total dollars — in NFL history. Mahomes signed a record deal two years ago for 10 years and $450 million, with an average annual value of $45 million that has since been exceeded.

The Mahomes is currently the fourth-highest-paid NFL player by average annual value, and will be even lower on the list in the coming months with Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow in the line of huge extensions. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback isn’t worried about his NFL salary, and he wants rings instead of money.

“When I signed my deal, I knew I would be ready for life no matter what kind of market was going on,” Mahomes said Friday of the quarterback’s hike. “But you just keep playing.”

“I mean money is one thing but when you get the Super Bowl rings at the end of your career, I think that’s going to be the thing you look at again and I think I’ve made enough money off the football field and obviously it’s also not going to matter at the end of the day.”

The Mahomes created his contract so that The Chiefs could compete for the Super Bowl and go on deep playoffs. The Chiefs have advanced to the AFC Championship in all four years under the Mahomes and have reached the Super Bowl since he signed the Monster deal that brought the market back in 2020.

Since Mahomes signed his contract, Aaron Rodgers, Keeler Murray and Deshaun Watson have both exceeded his average annual value. All of those deals were signed this past season, with Rodgers making $50.27 million, Murray $46.1 million, and Watson making $46 million.

The Chiefs have had to make some crucial roster decisions since signing with the Mahomes, moving on from Tyreek Hill and Tyrann Mathieu this off season, and struggling to come to an agreement on a long-term extension for Orlando Brown. Kansas City can still keep its core intact thanks to the flexibility of the Mahomes deal.

Mahomes is completely satisfied with his contract, stating that he doesn’t worry about him being the highest-paid player in the game. Winning the Super Bowls is the reward that Mahomes strives for, and it is achieved by having a strong roster around him.

Basically, Mahomes is more than good at making $45 million a season.

“I think especially at centre-back that the next man is the highest-paid man,” Mahomes said. “And any of these top-tier quarterbacks are making such a difference in the NFL football teams that they will be overlooked. I mean even if you look at the players who signed last year to this year, they are overlooked and I’m sure when he comes (Joe) Boroughs, (Justin) Herbert and Russell (Wilson) and all those guys, they’re going to keep raising the bar even higher.

“So, you always want to get paid and like I said take care of your family, but I want to have a great team around me as well, and whatever way you go, I make sure I have a great team around me for the rest of my career.”
