Here’s how to prepare for the daytime drink

BLight brunch, darts, daytime drinking – whatever name you’re known by, if you’ve enjoyed some alcohol-related fun during the day, you might as well have a few hangover stories you’d like to forget.

For starters, according to Dr. Litan, alcohol generally dehydrates you quickly—to make matters worse, daytime drinking usually occurs on hot, sunny days when people are already at risk of dehydration. Another reason is that daytime drinking usually lasts longer than a night out. Sometimes people drink as fast as they would at an evening event without realizing that they might be on the beach or playing two to four times. Spending the whole day at the beach where there are drinks, attending a sports game with a cold beer, visiting a winery on a sunny Saturday for a bachelor party – all of these events involve lots of sunshine, a whole day spent, wandering or long commutes or all what mentioned before. “This is why daytime drinking can sometimes kill people more than having a few glasses of wine at dinner,” says Dr. Levitan. “Cooler temperatures and sitting up with the intention of going to bed soon after consuming alcohol won’t deplete your body nearly as much as when factors like sun, swimming, sightseeing, or coming home from a game are included.”

In addition, as we already know, alcohol impairs your motor skills and your thinking. “Another danger of daytime drinking is that you’re less aware and in control of your body which can often cause injuries. And of course, the risk is maneuvering between sprained ankles into car accidents,” says Dr. Levitan. “As far as more mild injuries go, they are more likely to occur after daily drinking because sometimes people want to increase their day and keep doing things.”

TL; Dr? Sure, the cards are stacked against you when you drink in the day, but there are plenty of ways to prepare yourself for a less painful time the next morning. So, how do you prepare to drink the day so that you can have the most fun and feel your best later? Read on.

How to prepare for a one-day drinking event that ends (relatively) well

1. Stay up-to-date with your hydration levels before your drinking day

“To get ready for the daytime drinking, I suggest hydrating vigorously, and starting — seriously — a few days in advance,” says Dr. Levitan. “I would recommend both fluids and, if possible, electrolyte supplements.”

Another key reason to stay hydrated is that it’s easier to maintain hydration than realize you’re short on fluids too late and try to make up for it during your daily drinking event, says Andrea Ball, MD, a medical consultant to Highlight Labs. “The ethanol in alcohol that makes you get drunk is also a diuretic, which means it makes you excrete more fluid than usual,” says Dr. Ball. This aspect makes the alcohol drier. You want to enter your day full of fun while you’re ready, so staying on top of 60 to 80 ounces of water is a great way to prepare.

2. Fill drinks, tablets or mixes that restore electrolytes

Dr. says. Levitan: “One of the important things to remember about hydration is that it’s not just about water: electrolytes matter, too.” “You often lose a lot of important electrolytes and minerals when you’re outside in the sun and drinking.” This is why people realize they are dehydrated, drink plenty of water right away, and still don’t feel much better. To prevent this undesirable scenario, she recommends constantly hydrating prior to your event and continuing to do so for the duration.

3. Eat before you start drinking – and wear sunscreen

“The big mistake people make, especially when drinking during the day, is not having enough before they have alcohol,” says Dr. Ball. “Eating a meal with a good balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein is very beneficial in allowing alcohol to be absorbed more and less chance of poisoning or negative effects.” It is also important to have proper sun protection (sunscreen, hat, and loose but covered clothing), as this will help prevent additional side effects from sunburn or overheating.

4. Plan to drink less than you think you can handle

According to Dr. Levitan, being more modest about your alcohol consumption during any given event is an important part of preventing a hangover. “Partly this is because people often consume more throughout the day than they would at night,” she says. “But sugary drinks often easily cause a hangover because they mask the strength of the alcohol you’re consuming.”

Dr. Levitan adds that not drinking any (or enough) water and then suddenly pounding when you’re feeling down is often a cause of nausea and vomiting. “Vomiting is a huge dehydrating device, so you want to avoid that as much as possible by not drinking a lot of water and not drinking water suddenly to make up for lost fluids.”

5. Remember to be careful

Again, injuries happen more frequently while drinking during the day because you are probably more active than when you go out to a bar or restaurant at night. It’s always important to be careful when drinking, but it’s true especially True in hot sunny environments or around bodies of water. Of course, never drive drunk or operate machinery if you are drinking alcohol.
