Samsung’s second generation Intros AMD computer SSDs use Xilinx FPGAs to improve data throughput

Samsung has created a new computational SSD with the help of AMD which is intended to be crucial for efficient HPC setup.

By utilizing AMD’s Versal FPGA that they got from the Xilinx acquisition, Samsung ensures customers that they’ll get half the number of compute times and significantly lower power consumption (by nearly 70%). Also, the new CSD will provide less use of the system processor – by ninety-seven percent compared to the similar amount of standard SSDs that constantly access data.

Samsung’s new second generation computer SSDs can process data without the need for other hardware. The new device allows data to be transferred between several elements included in the computed paths.

An advantage of data processing on an SSD is that users will not need to transfer information between multiple storage devices. The new arithmetic SSD allows bandwidth to make streams faster, which reduces data latency because fewer unnecessary packets travel between the storage device and the processor. In turn, the processor is allowed to focus on more tasks, especially those that are more important to the system.

Previously used tasks taxed processing between memory and the CPU, with a system like this providing that data to partitioning itself into the storage device to handle a great deal of work. At the same time, the processor focuses on other tasks, and the new CSD (Computational Storage Engine) will also be able to help properly dissipate heat through the system.

Samsung’s new hard drive is a second-generation smart solid-state drive that delivers ARM cores capable of minimal power and temperature reduction within a supercomputer environment. The company stated that CSD would be ideal for the artificial intelligence/machine learning inference markets, as well as “business intelligence analysis, big data analytics, video transcoding, financial services, genomics, search queries, and transparent compression.”

The commercialization of the first generation of SmartSSD, in cooperation with AMD, has demonstrated that the computing storage market has great potential.
