Southeast Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey appeared as a guest on “The Paul Finebaum Show” Thursday at the end of the 2022 SEC Media Days.
Sankey Show that Alabama soccer coach Nick Saban spoiled his day by attacking Texas A&M soccer coach Jimbo Fisher and Jackson State coach Deon Sanders with comments in mid-May.
Saban said Fisher “bought every player on his team” to have the highest-ranked 2022 recruiting class. Saban also said, “The state of Jackson paid the guy a million dollars last year and that was a really good first division player to come to school. It was in the paper. They bragged about it. Nobody did anything about it.”
On Thursday, Sankey and Paul Feinbaum discussed the conference reorganization that occurred in June with the USC and UCLA going to the Big Ten Conference. This led to a discussion of the ensuing rumors of new teams joining the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Sankey talked about how upset he was by the rumors.
SEC’s Greg Sankey says Nick Saban spoiled his day in May
“I had a friend a long time ago — he was actually about a Honey Badger story in Sports Illustrated about something about employment that he wasn’t entirely knowledgeable or accurate — and so one of my friends said, ‘We were working,’ said Sankey. It would be. “There are certain things that spoil my day.”
“I don’t want to ask about those,” Feinbaum said in response.
“Well, I’ll tell you in the middle of May I was in New York City, it was 11 at night and I was at the awards show,” Sankey said. “I didn’t win the award and Dorina didn’t win the award. Then the phone rang about something that was said in Birmingham. So here’s an example of a bad day.”
“It was a difficult sleep for a lot of people,” Feinbaum said.
“Yes, it’s happening, and we’ve been able to progress,” Sankey said.

Saban made his comments on May 18 at an event promoting the 2022 World Games in Birmingham. The event was at The Fennec in Birmingham, Alabama.
On May 18, Sankey was at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square Sports Business Awards Gala. Sankey was nominated for Sports Director of the Year, and the Securities and Exchange Commission was nominated for League of the Year award.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a public reprimand to Saban and Fisher on Thursday, May 19. Fisher had a fiery response to Saban that Thursday morning.
