Dana White, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Yair Rodriguez are among the unearthed in the Cain Velasquez case

UFC President Dana White was among many in the mixed martial arts industry to support Cain Velasquez after the former heavyweight champion was accused of attempted murder.

White’s full letter to the judge in the ongoing murder case against Velazquez, dated March 4, was disclosed as a document in a subpoena filed by the former champion’s attorney, Marc Geragos, this week. The senior attorney says Velasquez was unjustly denied bail after three hearings and wants the California Court of Appeals to release him.

Velasquez, 39, is accused of stalking Harry Gularte, the man accused of molesting his family relative, and engaging in a high-speed manhunt before firing a .40-caliber pistol into a car carrying Gularte, his mother and stepfather. His stepfather, Paul Bender, was allegedly shot twice, later testifying in court that he feared for his safety if Velazquez was released.

Geragos, who is representing Velazquez in a separate civil suit against Gularte, argues that the last Fifth Amendment invocation by Bender in the civil case should invalidate his testimony thus far against Velázquez in the criminal case. Criminal case judge Shelena Brown rejected that argument and Geragos offered to pay $1 million in bail for Velazquez’s release as well as other terms of bail such as personal monitoring and outpatient treatment.

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, longtime US teammate of the American Kickboxing Academy, Khabib Nurmagomedov, also provided a letter of support from the former champion, as well as recent UFC Long Island champion Yair Rodriguez.

Below are the letters of MMA industry veterans submitted to the court.

Dana White

To the Supreme Court Justice of Santa Clara,

I am writing this reference fully aware of Ken Velasquez’s current charges of attempted murder and assault. | I was shocked when I found out about the charges against him, because they are completely out of character for the guy I was so proud to say he was twice in the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavy weight a hero.

I have known Mr. Velasquez for over 15 years, and during his time as an active athlete with the UFC, he represented our company with dignity and always treated others with respect. He was a typical example of how a professional athlete can carry himself, projecting a positive image to the UFC fan base. Mr. Velasquez was very professional and went above and beyond to make contact with our fans and promote the sport of mixed martial arts – not only as an entertainment product, but also as a character – building discipline.

As a Mexican American, Mr. Velasquez was proud of his heritage and did not miss the opportunity to visit Mexico on behalf of our company and show his gratitude to the Mexican fans for their support.

People who know him best describe him as a humble and kind-hearted man who was very loyal to his family, including his wife and two children.

If given the opportunity, I am sure Mr. Velasquez would desire nothing more than to return to his family and continue to make a positive impact on his community.

I sincerely request you to take this into account as you elaborate on the next steps in this process regarding Mr. Velazquez.

If you would like me to confirm any of the above, please feel free to contact me.

sincerely,

Dana White

Khabib Nurmagomedov

To the esteemed court:

Your honor, my name is Khabib Nurmagomedov. I am known in your country as the former undefeated UFC World Champion. I met Cain over ten years ago. We both trained at the same gym in San Jose known as the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). Cain is one of the most respected people in the gym full of honour. Cain is a leader and a family man.

Most of my time with Cain is personal but I can attest that in all my interactions with the man, he is an honest and kind hearted person who can do anything for his family and friends. He’s the kind of guy most of us want by our side in life. These kinds of experiences were an everyday occurrence.

I am aware of the charges of attempted murder among others. Although the charges against Cain must be dealt with in court, it appears that these charges are based very much on all circumstances. I hope the fees will be revised and lowered as more details come in. Once these judicial proceedings are completed, I have a strong opinion that Cain will not pose a risk of future criminal activity.

respectfully,

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Yair Rodriguez

to the esteemed court.

My name is Yair Rodriguez, I’m currently a number three UFC fighter in the featherweight division, as was Cain Velasquez once upon a time, for whom I am currently writing. One of the people in our sport that I admire the most and who has been an example and someone I am proud to call my friend, who has always had nothing but inspiring words for me and has been an example of dedication, hard work and family.

Cain Velasquez represented not only family and friends but courtiers as well, and I’m sure he’s changed the lives of many people in positive and inspiring ways. For many years, what I always wanted to achieve as an athlete was to have something close to what he did and an example of how to be as a person. A family man like me would consider myself.

I have seen Cain humble and kind for many years now, even when he was one of the most famous athletes in our sport. He was always someone willing to help and share knowledge, and this violent person was never in trouble or malice; Rather, someone who is funny and love life and people.

Feel free to mention this because I’ve read new about the charges against him, and I want to express my surprise, first because Cain Velasquez has never been in trouble with the law, nor in the midst of any criminal problem as far as I know.

Having known Cain for 9 years, and as I have expressed, the charges against him are surprising, I hope they will be resolved soon, and I am sure Cain Velasquez poses no criminal risk in any way despite everything. Instead, a good example for people looking to get off the streets with addictions and troubled families.

Thank you very much, Your Honor, for reading my concerns.

sincerely,

Yair Rodriguez
