14 SEC standings from quarterback to 2022

The SEC’s quarterback depth is reasonably strong heading into the 2022 season.

There are eight players returning under position in the league, not to mention a number of upcoming transfers who initially had experience in other schools. Some of the jobs that started have yet to be determined, as the competition is set to move to fall camp.

With pre-season practice starting early next month, here’s how the SEC group’s quarterbacks are heading into 2022 (* – expected start):

1. Bryce Young, Alabama

It seems that every year, the Alabama quarterback sets the school record for passing yards and touchdowns, and Young was the most recent to do so when he threw for 4,872 yards and 47 TDs in his first season as a rookie. He will struggle to win the Heisman Cup for the second time in a row in 2022.

2. Hendon Hooker, Tennessee

Hooker was beaten by teammate Joe Melton during pre-season last year, but he took the reins in the second week and never gave it up. The Virginia Tech move passed 2,945 yards and 31 touchdowns with just three interceptions, while adding 620 yards and nine revs.

Will Rogers

3. Will Rogers, Mississippi

As the catalyst for attacking Mike Leach for the Air Raid, Rogers set the SEC record for completion (505) while also throwing for 4,739 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2022. He didn’t throw the ball much, preferring to kill the opponent instead. Defenses by 1,000 small underground paths.

4. Will Levis, Kentucky

Levis’ first year at Lexington after moving from Penn State was mostly excellent (2,826 yards, 24 touchdowns), although he could improve on his 13th interception. With typical size (6-3, 222) and tools, Levis might be the The best NFL draft on this list.

Spencer Rattler

5. Spencer Rattler, South Carolina

Rattler moved from Heisman’s favorite to his job in less than half of last year’s season in Oklahoma, where he was disqualified in favor of fellow veteran Caleb Williams. Rattler entered the transfer gate and rejoined Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer, a former Sooners assistant who might be able to get the best of him.

6. Stetson Bennett, Georgia

Bennett got little or no credit for helping him engineer the Bulldogs National Championship that was held a season ago, but the previous smaller run earned him little more than a win during his Georgia start. He doesn’t have much of a future for the NFL, but his legacy in Athens is secure.

7. KJ Jefferson, Arkansas

No one in the SEC handles more of his offensive team’s load than Jefferson, who led the Razorbacks in attempts dash (146), yards (664) and touchdowns (6) as well as 2,676 yards and 21 TDs with only four passing interceptions. With Treylon Burks out to the NFL, he’ll have to advance further as a pass.

Anthony Richardson

8. Anthony Richardson, Florida

Richardson showed bewildering skill in the part-time job behind departing Emory Jones in 2021, passing for 529 yards and rushing for 401 despite a nagging ankle injury. New coach Billy Napier has turned attacking on Richardson this season, and his game will do much to determine how well the Gators’ side make a comeback in 2021.

Max Johnson

9. Max Johnson, Texas A&M *

Johnson was a bright spot on the mid-level LSU team in 2021, passing for 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns with just six interceptions before leaving through the transfer gate. He would rank higher on this list if the Aggies’ undisputed starter were heading into 2022, but instead he’d be battling Haynes King and Conner Weigman in fall camp.

jackson dart

10. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss*

Dart, who was highly rated last season, started half the season at USC and did well at times. But he hit the transfer gate after Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams arrived from Oklahoma and landed at the Ole Miss, where he would compete for the job with Luke Altmyer. Either of them should thrive on Lane Kevin’s offense.

11. Zach Calzada, Auburn*

Forced to play a key role at Texas A&M after King was injured early in the season, Calzada performed well, albeit stunningly, in the win over Alabama. He moved to Auburn in the off-season, but missed the spring with a shoulder injury. Calzada is a possible starter if it’s healthy, but it should show more consistency.

Miles Brennan

12. Miles Brennan, LSU*

Brennan has been at LSU for what seems like forever, but hasn’t been able to stay healthy for more than a few games at a time. Having missed the entire 2021 season, he’s the favorite to beat several of the much-recognized young players in this fall’s shots. The big question is how long he will be in the squad.

Mike Wright

13. Mike Wright, Vanderbilt

Wright enters fall camp as a starter after splitting time with Ken Sales in 2021. Wright has some ability to play as a runner and passerby, but he won’t be surrounded by as many talents with the Dean. He will probably run for his life behind an attacking line that lost his best players in the transfer window.

Jack Abraham

14 – Jack Abraham, Missouri*

Abraham is in his fifth school seven years ago, having started three seasons (2018-20) at Southern Miss School between stints at Louisiana Tech, Northwest Mississippi Community College and Mississippi State. He’s the favorite to win the job with the Tigers, and maybe he can thrive under Eli Drinkewitz.
