Update, June 24: The Ranger Raptor takes on the Goodwood hillclimb

Ford of Europe has publicly shown its upcoming Ranger Raptor for the first time, allowing it to drive a high-performance double cab on the Goodwood hillclimb.

The next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor was revealed earlier this year in February and is the first to be powered by a petrol engine, with Ford’s 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6, ‘EcoBoost’ now under the hood.

The latest Ranger Raptor, with 292 kW and 583 Nm, generates serious performance credentials for nearly two tons of the ute, with the first examples of the popular model expected to arrive on Australian shores next month.

February 22: Ford Ranger Raptor revealed

Ford pulled the covers off its all-new Ranger Raptor, but before that, we caught a peek at their Melbourne Design Center which you can see in the video.

No sale date or pricing has been revealed yet, but what we can tell you is that the upcoming Raptor has a 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine that produces 292 kW of power at 5,650 rpm and 583 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. per minute. This engine is from Ford’s North American range where many SUVs including the Explorer are powered.

“The 3.0-liter engine brings a different dynamic to the Ranger Raptor that will satisfy even the most die-hard performance enthusiast,” says Dave Burn, chief Ford Performance Program engineer for the Ranger Raptor.

“The new powertrain’s superior acceleration and performance make you grin from ear to ear.”

For Australia owners, it brings powertrain performance that the current Raptor has always lacked from a four-cylinder diesel, with the ability to match and make the most of the Raptor’s exceptional chassis.

Like Ford’s ‘Lion’ V6 diesel engine that we’ll also see in the new Ranger and in the past in the Ford area as well as many Land Rover models, the Mill petrol uses a compressed graphite iron (CGI) block that is claimed to be 75% more solid and stronger than die castings. regular iron.

This was big news when Discovery 3 debuted in 2004 and it’s still relevant today.

As in the 2022 Ford Ranger, the V6 will be supported by a 10-speed automatic transmission and a two-speed transmission.

Hardcore Hardware

The big news for Raptor drivers who want to get off-road is the installation of a driver-selectable locking differential for both the front and rear axles – a first for a Ranger in Australia. This will give the new Raptor improved low-speed “crawl” performance to rival its high-speed capabilities.

These high-speed blasts are again supported by Fox Racing shock absorbers on each wheel. These units are a step up from the Fox shocks used on previous Raptor in that they electronically adapt to driving conditions and terrain.

Fox’s 2.5-inch live valve internal bypass shock absorbers use advanced control technology that delivers position-sensitive damping. It not only adapts to driving conditions but also has specific maps to suit the car’s different selectable driving modes.

Another feature it has is the race-proven bottom control that applies maximum damping force into the last 25 percent of the shock’s travel in situations such as when descending after jumps, to maintain optimal control.

They can also sense when the shock is fully extended as the wheels leave the ground and prepare the dampers to return to the ground, and they can stiffen the rear dampers to prevent the Raptor from sitting under heavy acceleration, increasing the car’s stability.

Like the current model, the new Raptor rear suspension is an adaptation of the Ford Everest coil spring and Watt linkage design to provide superior handling and ride quality compared to what can be achieved with the Ranger’s regular leaf spring rear design.

The Fox shocks are similar to those used on the current generation F-150 Raptor and the recently previewed Bronco Raptor, but only these US vehicles use larger 3.0-inch units to control the larger, heavier 35- and 37-inch tires available on those excavators. Ford says the 2.5-inch dampers are a perfect fit for the lighter 33-inch BFG KO2 fitted to the Ranger Raptor.

Speaking of American vehicles, one of the main reasons to give the new Ranger Raptor the petrol-powered one is that it is set to be launched in the United States where it will join the rest of the Ranger lineup there.

The United States is a market for gasoline and diesel will never be mentioned there. Not that we should expect to complain about the performance of the EcoBoost V6 when we get behind the wheel here in Australia.

What will be interesting is the series of Raptor rides in Australian conditions. The Raptor is heavier than regular Ranger models and with its performance always available under the right foot, it can hinder the V6 Raptor’s gasoline consumption.

The new Raptor is said to be 30 to 80 kg heavier than the current model, depending on specifications for different international markets.

Multiple modes

The new Raptor drive modes now have seven settings in which the driver can be selected; Three for on-road use and four for off-road use. These optimize engine, transmission, steering and shock absorption calibrations to suit specific conditions and include Baja Mode for optimum performance on high-speed off-road.

“Although the Ranger Raptor is inspired by desert racing, it is also a highly capable off-road vehicle. Out of the box, we have created an off-road vehicle that does not need to be modified to get you where you need to go and back again safely,” he said. Byrne.

The Raptor V6’s engine breathes through a full-length dual exhaust system and also has four modes for adjusting volume and tone to suit the driver. Keep your cool to sneak away from the camp and unlock it fully for Baja Mode blasts.

“We really wanted the Baja mode to be the ultimate expression of high-speed off-road capability,” said Byrne.

The new Raptor clearly embraces all the features of the 2022 Ranger with its bold new front design, wider wheel track and user-focused cargo bay. No word yet on this tub’s payload capacity, or towing capacity, but these have been areas where the Raptor has been hacked in the past.

The interior features a large 12.4-inch center display for premium models in the new Ranger range and a new 12-inch display. The front seats, inspired by those used by fighter pilots, have long backs and side bolsters to support the driver and passenger, and even the Raptor’s rear seat gets exclusive extra bolsters to cushion its occupants.

More is coming

While the new Raptor promises a lot in terms of performance and features, we still don’t know when it will hit the market.

The new Ranger goes on schedule around June/July and we expect the Raptor won’t be too far behind the regular models.

As mentioned, payload, towing capabilities, fuel tank size and fuel consumption were not disclosed.

We also don’t have any indication of price from Ford, but given that the current model is in the mid-$80k range and the new model promises much more, we expect the price to go much higher.

Will we see the first $100,000 midsize SUV in the Ranger Raptor? Time will tell and only a test drive can tell us if it’s worth the money.
