Austin Dillon never imagined he would get a reality show. But we are in 2022, and anything can happen.
Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. “Austin Dillon’s Life in the Fast Lane” airs on USA Network. The show focuses on Dillon, his wife Whitney and their best friends Paul and Marielle Swan.
“It’s great because anyone can watch this show,” Dillon said before the show started. “You have the girls, who are fun, loving and fun. You have Paul, and he’s wide open and brings energy to the show. Then there’s me who’s focused on my job and NASCAR. I’m from steady Eddie.”
Dillon, who drives the famous No. 3 Chevrolet race car Richard Childress – his grandfather’s team, is thrilled with the opportunity to bring NASCAR to a new audience.
But signing up for the 2018 Daytona 500 for this project wasn’t so simple.
“You set a lot of ultimatums,” he said. “My wife filmed a show called Wives Races.” Marielle, Paul, and I said with her, “I’m never going to shoot a show unless it’s about our group and what we’re doing at RCR.” We were asked to shoot a pilot, but I didn’t think anything was going to happen.
“And certainly the USA Network picked her up. Two months later, we started filming and people were walking into our house and becoming part of the family. It’s very exciting.”
Throughout the show, you’ll see Dillon flirting with Swann, a member of the pit crew. The two became very close to each other, as well as both of their better halves.
“We show characters from everyone on the show,” Dillon joked. “Paul is always 10. The USA will end up using him in some form of WWE at some point.”
With 16 races in the 2022 season, Dillon has three first class races – more than last year already – and six top 10 races, on course to surpass his career highs in both classes. Throughout the show, viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at two of his second-place finishes in 2022, including impending wins at both Auto Club Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.
“We’ve had some really good runs this year,” Dillon said. “We were very close to getting that win. We are right outside looking for the playoffs.”
With 10 races remaining in the regular season, Dillon finished 19th on the playoff network, 47 points off the cutoff streak, currently held by Eric Almerola.
The reality show kicks off ahead of a major USA Network weekend.
The USA Network will feature 11 Nascar Cup Series races and 15 Xfinity Series races in the second half of the 2022 season. It’s the first time since summer 2016 that NASCAR races will be on the network. That year, the Cup Series race was at Watkins Glen in the United States due to the Summer Olympics.
This year, NBC chose to move some of the races to the USA after NBCSN shut down in late 2021. For this reason, Nascar is exploring the possibility of getting fans to watch the races after 2024, as part of its next TV rights deal.
USA Network’s first race will air on Sunday, July 3 at 3 p.m. from Road America. NBC is taking over its portion of the schedule this weekend, with the Cup Race airing at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 26.
