The Lonesome Hunters #1: plot summary
The Lonesome Hunters #1 We started a hundred years ago by introducing us to Young Howard: a local church rookie monster hunter who is obsessed with hunting “fads”. Armed only with a magical sword apparently stolen from a “creature as old as the earth itself”, he, his father and a group of fanatics storm a random building where a group of people wearing replica Guy Fawkes masks appears to have summoned a deer-like devil. Or just a giant talking deer. hard to say. Regardless, Howard and his father and fanatics stormed the building. In the fighting that followed, all but Howard and the deer died, and the building caught fire. The deer thinks about killing Howard and taking the sword, but decides that it will be boring, so he helps Howard survive the fire instead.
Then the story quickly advances a century later to the present day, with Howard just a bitter old man full of regrets living in a beautiful rundown neighborhood. Everyone who knew and loved him died a century ago, and all he has is a magical sword to remind them of. There doesn’t seem to be much use in his life now. This all changes when he meets a little girl named Lube.
Up: Horror Story?
Loeb was just a random girl who pushed a silver pocket watch into Howard’s hands after he called her uncle. Howard thinks nothing of it, and takes some sleeping pills to take a rest in his apartment room. However, Loeb stopped by clicking on his door. Apparently, the uncle opened the window to deal with the magpie pecking at it, but then said that the magpie attacked him. Even worse, said magpie was now sitting on Uncle’s head, glowing, and both magpie and uncle receded from their eyes, as the magpie had been chanting some sort of strange magpie ritual spell the whole time.
This is clearly not a good thing. Thus Howard chant his own spell to thwart the Magpie, while Loeb runs to get his chest. Inside the box turned out to be that magical sword from all those years ago. It looks a bit old and broken, but it still works. Will you succeed in killing the evil magical magpie before you can do anything scary? Well, that’s what we’ll find out in it Lone Hunter #2.
The Lonesome Hunters #1: The good
The story is the best part of The Lonesome Hunters #1befitting an artist Harrow County. Tyler Crook wrote here a compelling and interesting story. Like I said before, it reminds me of this strange combination of higher And the supernatural, most of them from the former. As a Pixar fan, I am very fond of this type of story. The hint that Lupe’s uncle was a deeply flawed father seems at best a good preparation for Howard to be that good parent to Lupe. On the flip side, Lupe may be just what Howard needs to allow him to find some kind of closure to his traumatic past. Taking care of an innocent child may be just what Howard needs to purge his inner demons once and for all. From the looks of this giant deer thing, it might just literally be.
The artwork is another big plus for The Lonesome Hunters #1. You can definitely feel Harrow County Influencing the artwork. This strange mixture of terrifying horror and sometimes cute expressions makes all the characters feel like they came from Harrow County. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of the latter than the first, given the structure of the story.
The Lonesome Hunters #1: bad
My only complaint is with The Lonesome Hunters #1 is that there aren’t enough interactions between Howard and Lupe yet to satisfy me. Specifically the cute and funny kind. If the premise of this story is like higherI’d like to see more of that. I really hope some of that comes up in the next issue. Your opinion here may differ though depending on your taste.
