As told to Shawn Ryan
Captain Glenn Davis is the man responsible for the cruises and excursions aboard the Sabrage, one of St. Augustine’s famous charter boats. Having spent his life on the water, Davis knows how to offer his clients an enjoyable experience. Sabrage can be found at the shipyards, 117 Dockside Drive.
Tell me about Sabrage Charters.
Sabrage is a custom Cooper catamaran that measures 63 feet in length. We offer a variety of trips for individuals and groups. We regularly schedule day trips for sunset cruises and eco tours, and we also do many custom private charters. And we have a new lunch and swim trip to do this summer.
Tell me about this new journey.
We will start working soon. All information will be on the website as soon as we are ready. But it’s a four-hour cruise. We are doing a nice little picnic lunch. About an hour or two in a location up the back side of Vilano, a small beach area. We anchor there and put some of those big lily pads, and we’ve got a cornucopia of pasta; We are quite close to the beach there. People can play in the water for a few hours and then enjoy a nice little cruise back home.
What do you like most about what you do?
It’s like I don’t like it! I love everything about it. I have been in the ship charter business for 40 years now. So, I ran a lot of different gigs in the Virgin Islands, mainly, and then Florida – the Keys. This model is really amazing. It is really comfortable. Great sound system on the boat. It’s very versatile, so the area we work in is really beautiful, you know, year-round.
It’s a really great product, great formula for making compacts.
There is a lot of freedom in it. And my partners are really good. We have a lot of responsibilities, so it’s kind of a good balance at work. It’s a good team, you know? So, let’s all get involved and get it done.
Who are your partners?
Jonathan Cordero and Ian Bartlett.
Do you divide the duties?
I’m the captain, so I’m kind of in charge of the boat and all the stuff in the back of the house. But the guys do a great job. They work on the deck and work in the bar.
Sometimes, guests will want to have something served. They will have caterers bringing food on board. Therefore, they do a great job of taking care of the guests on the deck.
And then all the unseen stuff, all the maintenance and storage and all that stuff, they all take good care of it.
And then we all get involved in the marketing and try to get the word out.
It’s pretty much something seven days a week.
Tell me about your background.
I started, by and large, right after graduating from high school. I had the opportunity to go to a place in the Bahamas called AUTEC (US Navy’s Atlantic Subsurface Test and Evaluation Center). It was a civilian job, but it was at a naval base on Andros Island.
I went to Sea School first and did all my homework, but then I needed sea time. So, I just started working on boats, and lived in Andros for six months. I worked on a torpedo, which is a very interesting job.
It was great. I have to meet some great people. I learned alot. I did a lot of fishing there. And then I went back to the west coast of Florida, the Fort Myers Beach area, started working on fishing boats, and got sea time.
When I was 20, I got my license, got my own boat, and started taking little half-day fishing trips. She went from there to the 27 year old in the Virgin Islands with the boats and came back here about eight years ago and was doing a few other things.
Then this opportunity came two years ago. It was two years ago in September when my partner John spoke to some mutual friends in St. Thomas about trying to get a boat like the Sabrage here.
Then they put me in the mix because I’m the boat man. And it worked. Really nice partnership. Fabulous boat. So, I couldn’t be happier.
Life is full of seasons, and so I feel really lucky in this one.
Tell me about the boat.
It is a purpose-built boat. It was only designed for these day trips. It has two bathrooms on board. Really nice full service bar. It is very well equipped. Lots of comfortable comfortable seats. Three quarters of the boat has a hard deck, so there are plenty of shaded areas there.
But we have Isinglass sets on the sides, so you have a fresh breeze flowing through. And then, in the areas of Sagittarius, it’s wide open, so you can go up there and get some sun.
And we have a really sophisticated sound system on board with bluetooth, so sometimes on private charters guests can play their own music. Whatever they like. We can customize all those special trips to a great degree. We also have a DJ on the boat.
John is a local musician too, so we now have a monthly concert series. We get live music on the boat. Usually, they are sold out pretty much all at once.
Therefore, the boat is really versatile. You can customize things and create creative events. It’s a place in a sense, too. It has gone beyond just being a charter boat; It’s a real place. We do a lot of weddings. We had about a half a dozen feasts on the boat, so that was pretty cool.
This is one of the things I love about the process. We can do many different things with the model we have.
The live music sounds so great.
yes. And the guests, a lot of the time, they have an artist they want to bring, and we’re like, “Sure, bring them.”
If people are interested in reaching out to Sabrage Charters, how can they do so?
The best way to send an email to me. Go to our site. There is a Connect button. It is very easy to send us an email. It’s [email protected]
What do you love most about living here on First Coast?
I’ve lived in different parts of Florida from the Keys to southwest Florida and everything, and I’ve grown up in the South, so I feel like this is the most convenient place to live in Florida.
You get a nice balance – you have good tourism, but it’s also a nice place to live. The people are wonderful. It is a really comfortable place to live. I love him.
How do you like to spend your free time?
What free time? (laughs) I love spending time with my family. And I love fishing. I can’t fish as much as I’d like. But, when visiting family – I have family in Tallahassee and in North Carolina. So, they come to see us, and we go see them.
But I love being on the water. So, any chance my family and I should go out. If we don’t have a ride, we sometimes get on the boat just to get down on the water.
St. Augustine is a wonderful city. I’m a history buff, so I love the history and architecture of St. Augustine. It must be a great town for the many great restaurants here and things to do and the beaches are great. So, it checks all the boxes – whatever you want to do.
